FREQUENTLY ASKED

A hydraulic quick hitch is a device fitted to an excavator or other piece of earth-moving machinery, allowing the operator to connect and change attachments from the safety and security of the cab using the machine’s hydraulic system. This technology enables one excavator to work with a wide range of attachments at minimal cost to efficiency.

Hydraulic quick hitches are commonly used with attachments such as digging buckets, grading buckets, breakers, and other specialist handling equipment. By allowing attachments to be changed more efficiently, they can help improve machine versatility, reduce downtime and increase productivity on site.

An excavator quick hitch, or quick hitch, allows operators to change buckets and other excavator attachments quickly and efficiently, without the need to manually remove and replace the attachment pins.

The quick hitch is fitted to the end of the excavator arm and connects to the attachment by engaging with its pins. The hitch hooks onto one pin before a locking mechanism secures the second. With a hydraulic quick hitch, this locking mechanism is operated hydraulically from the excavator cab, allowing compatible attachments to be connected and released quickly and safely.

Quick hitches help reduce attachment changeover times, minimise downtime and increase excavator productivity and versatility on site. As the pioneer of quick hitch technology, Miller continues to design and manufacture hitches with safety, reliability, and productivity at their core.

As the original innovator of the fully automatic, universal pin grabber quick hitch, Miller remain at the forefront of both innovation and safety. Our hitches are developed for demanding earth-moving applications, with a focus on versatility, durability and productivity.

Customers can explore the Miller hydraulic quick-hitch range or visit our technical downloads for model-specific specifications, operating instructions, compatibility information and compliance documentation.

A hydraulic quick hitch must be correctly matched to the excavator and attachment, properly installed and operated in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions.

Miller hitches are engineered with ISO 13031 compliant independent locking features intended to keep the attachment securely connected, including in the event of hydraulic pressure loss. Safe operation also depends on correct operator training, regular inspection, appropriate maintenance and confirmation that the attachment is securely engaged before use.

ISO 13031 is an international safety standard for quick hitches used on earth-moving machinery, including excavators. The current reference is ISO 13031:2016, together with Amendment 1:2025.

The standard sets out safety requirements intended to reduce the risk of an attachment being unintentionally released from a quick hitch. It covers areas including hitch design, locking and safety systems, operator information, functional checks, and testing.

Miller has built a strong industry reputation for quick-hitch safety through engineering innovation, rigorous testing, and product designs developed to meet recognised standards such as ISO 13031. Our quick hitches incorporate independent locking features designed to keep the attachment securely connected, including in the event of hydraulic pressure loss. The GT Series is designed to ensure the widest set of OEM pin pickups can be safety attached from the security of the cab.

Our hitches’ advanced safety features have been cycle-tested beyond their expected working life. This includes fatigue testing of the frame over more than 100,000 cycles at loads exceeding those generated by the excavator, helping to demonstrate durability and reliability under demanding operating conditions.

Miller products are designed and tested with all applicable safety requirements in mind, including ISO 13031. Product-specific compliance depends on the hitch model, machine configuration and the requirements of the market in which it is used.
